Carlsbad, NM is mostly known for its nearby series of caverns and various oil and gas fields. Somewhat less known is the extensive water-works projects that expand the Pecos River and provide a not-insubstantial flow of water for the various crops in the area. New Mexico is actually second in the nation where it comes to Pecan production. While Georgia leads the way, constant problems resulting from their wet climate nags their farmers. New Mexico producers have no such problems. Forward thinking with various public works projects have provided water, with none of the tree-killing drawbacks found in other monocultures. There is even a sustained local economy of residential harvesting. Carlsbad, NM has become a model for modern sustainable harvesting.
